we are all these things
I like how the tatters make it seem somewhat more dignified, lend some credibility to everything that the flag represents. It's not a piece of fabric anymore, but a story, a bit of someone's life, a tale in and of itself of valour and independence and battles fought long ago.
After time with one that has truly lived, who could ever love a flag when it is new? It has yet so much life to live, so many hearts to capture and enthrall; one day, when it is older-- one day, when it has made a story of its own.
The funny thing is that until the wind blows, you may never know exactly what it is you have.
